The line about the child going to church and people there were "lurching" is probably about a child that grew up in a Pentacostal Church.I believe the Pentacostal church-goers do the whole "snake handling" and "speaking in toungues" practice.I can see where non-Pentacostal folk would think these actions in church are odd.

I think the first two were different physically, but very minor, I don't think it was to do with abuse. I mean ok the first kid had white hair because of a a physical trauma but not abuse. The third one I think you hit on the head.

I think the idea is that the first to kids went through an actual physical form of abuse. The final child it was more of a form of mental abuse rather than physical.An overbearing parenting that forced their beleifs rather than open him up to other possibilities.Again this is how I interperate it and can be wrong.

Basically the boy is forced to go to a church where they do strange rituals which makes him feel strange and isolated. Probably not making him very popular at school.
