http://www.petitiononline.com/... Funk Railroad performing Inside Looking Out live from 1969. This clip was shot at "The Show" WITF-TV in Hershey,Pa. November 1969. Mark & Don were 20 & Mel 18 years old. This clip is timeless. I've had hundreds of messages from people of 4 generations worldwide that just are in awe of this powerful performance (Folks from 11 to 83 years of age). I've been told it's early "metal", to the original "grunge", to the real begining of "punk, to the first "garage band", to "pure tribal rock", to "straight-in-your-face rock", to "industrial-strength power rock". One things for sure, it is powerful, passionate, singular, & unique. Mark, Don, & Mel changed music forever with 10 minute Power Songs like this one. This is a POWER TRIO at its best. Grand Funk Railroad was truly a "Performance Vehicle". What you heard on the albums could be duplicated 100% on their live performances. Many would say it's impossible for a 3 piece band to do this live. See the impossible. Once you start watching it, it's hard not to finish it. This is the most popular GFRxR video on the net. Yea, Mark would tape-up the F-holes to give the guitar a unique sound. That messenger was a somewhat cheap guitar, but Mark made it special the way he played it.

I second that!

Seriously wrong. Please seek help immediately. You just witnessed the #1 live band perform live you momo! Where are parental controls when you need them? Silly litle kid calling GFR empty. That's Mark's famous (green) Musicraft Messenger guitar.

Anybody know what kind of guitar Mark is playing?

Sorry there's nothing "empty" that even remotely describes Grand Funk. They're full tilt boogie your ass off rock and roll. For their music they were in need of nothing, dig!

Farner wasn't alone among guitarists back in the day who liked to do the "chicken scratch muting" on the guitar, although he's more known for it than others. I was just listening more intently to my Deep Purple "box set" the other day, and noticed Ritchie Blackmore doing quite a bit "chicken scratch muting" himself, especially on the "In Rock" album. Also, Joe Walsh did a fair bit of it on his Les Paul guitar in his James Gang period (and it does sound pretty cool on a Les Paul guitar!)

I always liked GFR, but like any three piece band that likes to play a lot of solo guitar riffs against nothing more than a bass and percussion background, the music finds itself "empty". Grand Funk was always in need of a rhythm guitar to provide fill when Farner was showing off his solo prowness.
