www.turkeyvoyage.comhome pageIstanbul is Turkey's most populous city, and its cultural and financial center. The city covers 25 districts of the Istanbul province. It is located at 41° N 29° E, on the Bosphorus strait, and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) side of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world which is situated on two continents. In its long history, Istanbul (Constantinople) served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330-395), the Byzantine Empire (395-1204 and 1261-1453), the Latin Empire (1204-1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922). The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. The "Historic Areas of Istanbul" were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985."Istanbul was ConstantinopleNow it's Istanbul, not ConstantinopleBeen a long time gone, ConstantinopleNow it's Turkish delight on a moonlit nightEvery gal in ConstantinopleLives in Istanbul, not ConstantinopleSo if you've a date in ConstantinopleShe'll be waiting in IstanbulEven old New York was once New AmsterdamWhy they changed it I can't sayPeople just liked it better that waySo take me back to ConstantinopleNo, you can't go back to ConstantinopleBeen a long time gone, ConstantinopleWhy did Constantinople get the worksThat's nobody's business but the TurksIstanbul (Istanbul)Istanbul (Istanbul)Even old New York was once New AmsterdamWhy they changed it I can't sayPeople just liked it better that wayIstanbul was ConstantinopleNow it's Istanbul, not ConstantinopleBeen a long time gone, ConstantinopleWhy did Constantinople get the worksThat's nobody's business but the TurksSo take me back to ConstantinopleNo, you can't go back to ConstantinopleBeen a long time gone, ConstantinopleWhy did Constantinople get the worksThat's nobody's business but the Turks "Istanbul

Hey, I have a question for y'e: How was New Amsterdam, and how did your life there compare to that during your time in New York, hm? You must be truly old to have lived through all of that. Since you actually lived though those times till now, then you could be famous for straightening up all sorts of qualms people have about historical accuarcy of this period. TaTa for now.

So true. The Alhambra palace in Granada is one of the most beautiful palaces/castles I've ever been in. Built by the Moors during their rule. A civilisation tolerant of all faiths...until the Moors were defeated by the brutal Christian forces who ransacked and pillaged a lot of the Moorish influence as they reconquered the centre & north of Spain. And i say all this as a Christian myself.

you r right brother if muslims hadn't been tolerant there wouldn't be christians now in spain and balkans, as today there are only 15.000 muslims in spainalthough moors ruled spain over 700 years
syedalz (September 21, 2008 at 6:38 pm)
thats the pattern of tolerance with most Muslims kingdoms. Very tolerant- INdia remains 80% HIndu after 1000 yrs of Muslim rule, Andalusia/ Arab Spain was the MOST tolerant society of its time, when Europe was persecuting Jews and burning heretics..they fled to Muslim lands. Its tragic and ironic.'When Spanish Jews reached Istanbul, being exiled by the Catholic king, the Sultan came out to welcome them-'What a foolish man is the king of SPain, to impoverish his kingdom and enrich mine'.

These countries you mention were overrun by the Turks and they were part of the Ottoman empire for centuries. These individual nations won a few skirmishes but in the end they lost the war. They were never the equal of the Turkish army.
