I own both Toyota and Volkswagen. Our 2002 Jetta TDI at 3000 feet above sea level we averaged between 38-42 mpg city and 54- 60 mpg highway. Over all best highway mileage was 63mpg. Audi is owned by VW and uses the same engines. The Audi A2 TDI is more fuel efficient then any of those in this test. Getting average of 80mpg imperial mixed driving.

from previous comment3. I can tell you from personal experience that Prius gas mileage varies. If you don't pay attention at all to how you are driving, you will get mid 40 mpg. But if you hypermile (average 55 mpg on highway and don't over accelerate after a stop sign, you will get 58-60 mpg. I do it all of the time when I am watching my miles. This is not always possible when I am in a rush. But if you want to max your miles...

1. Prius is a mid size car. Comparing it to a focus or the smart car is unfair. Of course a focus costs $10k or $15k, it is a base line car, small car.2. Unfortunately, American cars are not nearly as reliable as Toyotas. The typical focus or smart car will start costing you thousands/year after five years, while the Prius won't. Toyotas are better made. You will see lots of them on the road for 200-300k miles. Look at the resale values as confirmation.part 2...

Years ago I had a 1989 GM car that got 36 mpg on the highway every time. It had sufficient performance with the 5 spd. (enough to get speeding tickets...) It didn't feel like an econobox. It would suit the "needs" of over 90% of Americans. So today, nearly 20 years later, we're supposed to believe that technology hasn't progressed ? There's a sort of collusion going on. Exhibit A: The FACT that Europe is awash in 50 mpg cars...many made by GM and Ford.

I own a 2001 Prius with 95000 on the clock. It drives as new, no rattles, the Hybrid Synergy Drive is all original and the engine and trans are smooth. I get an easy 55mpg (UK gals) and as our prices are over $10 a gallon.... Plus whilst others say that 45-50mpg isn't that amazing - if the engine's off every time you stop - you're saving even more! Google Prius, you'll find many owners with 150k+ miles, all on original batteries. The rumour they only last until 100k is just that, a rumour.

The batteries last over 150,000 miles and the brake pads last 90,000 miles. Believe me, you save a TON of money owning the Prius over any other car. You can buy one nicely equipped with a zero deductible 100,000 mile warranty for about $530/month for 60 months. I drive over 200 miles per day and I spend about $17.00 in fuel with gas prices at $3.49 per gallon.

I own a cab company and I am phasing out all FORD vehicles and replacing them with the Toyota Prius. The Prius gets well over 48mpg in the city as well as the highway. In fact, I have personally over 55mpg city. For all of you johnmonkeys and jizzmongers out there, I suggest you actually drive the Hybrids before you go off half cocked telling people what you think you know about them. You will never find another American car in my fleet (Hybrid Escape excluded) unless they go hybrid.

If you're gonna buy a prius, then you better put that money that you're saving on gas, in the bank. . .You'll need every penny to replace the batteries. ^^
