Excuse me while I put my hair shirt on. For me, pianos and echo-effects don't have a place in folk music and for me this song is folk music and I like it plain and not too slow. If you want to dress it up a bit, the song can take it and no-one will stop you. There's no questioning the quality of June Tabor's voice, though to rate it against Anne Briggs or Frankie Armstrong wouldn't be easy. It's just good to be alive and hear such wonderful sounds.

I absolutely concur with June's many fans. And I once had a chance to work with her, doing the "Stones" by Les Barker. I think that was at Sidmouth back in the 1980s.

Far too much echo added to the voice!

Possibly the best version ever recorded. Check out James Taylor. Beg borrow, or steal June Tabor's Anthology
