Yo! I'm a guitarist who loves PM and SCO, but HEY - they got outplayed here! Still, there are some knuckleheads fighting over their stock licks like dogs under a dinner table. The guitar is a great instrument but it's incestuous to only study guitar players. Listen to Joey's left hand - it sounds cooler than anything that Sco or PM played here (no dis.)

Sounds great! Defrancesco is a genius!I think you have to learn a lot of music theory, and then forget it to play Jazz. Because Jazz is very complex and requires several musical knoweledge, but it requires the passion that theory books can´t give you.By the way, the band is great, but a good bass guitar player would make it even greater... it´s just my opinion

Its called syncopation, and is has been used way before grant green. classical is to blame as you put it. Grant green was a true genius and and was just following in the path of Jimmy raney and horn players.

Jazz is definately not for dummies and certainly not created by them. Love this version of "Sunny," it's as good as his unconscious days..."cream"

In my previous post I was supposed to write "Jazz is 10% theory..."
AmundLauritzen (September 2, 2008 at 10:01 am)
The fact that you need a lot of theory to play jazz is simply untrue. Yes, you need the foundations of diatonic harmony, knowledge of arpeggios and general substitution principles, but that's about it. Theory is no substitute for a good ear, which is what jazz is about. This theory thing is a misconception that draws poseurs to jazz because they think you need to be a theory professor to play it. Jazz is 10%, the rest is good ear, good taste and that little 2% magic.

You need to know alot of music theory to play jazz. I learned it in college and I am still learning because it is so complex. I love metal but jazz is much more complex theoretically. |
