"Gurudev" refers to Maharishi's teacher, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, first Shankaracharya of the North in 150 years or so. MMY was very strict about never takig that title for himself, and left strict instructions for his followers after his death not to do so either.

While I like John Lennon's version, Fiona Apple's rendition has artistic merit and I enjoy it as well.

why is it that this vid and the movie adaption of this song both associate the song with riots?

Its actually "Jai Guru Deva Om" meaning "I give thanks to Guru Dev (heavenly teacher) om". I'm not 100%, but what I remember John Lennon was talking about the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi whom they visited in 1967.
