I use Reason for most things, but it is pretty daunting if you are just getting your feet wet. Like ploydfink says FL Studio has a much easier learning curve on realizing your ideas. As far as gear goes Korg has a lot of fun gear. If you can afford it the Korg Electribe EMX is really fun to start out with. The KAOSSILATOR is really cost effective and you can carry it around with you (unlike the EMX).
