Now i am not in ANY way putting down either Judo or BJJ. We use a lot of Judo throws(done from different angles mind you. All our attacks are done either from behind or the side by way of flanking) and BJJ is extremely effective should the fight get to the ground. But here's the problem. BJJ and Judo are now SPORTS. Not combat systems. If you teach ONLY to throw or ONLY to punch, you won't be very effective in a self defence situation. Now it's athletes with drink sponsors in UFC.

I myself train and am an assistant instructor in Kuntao Silat under my Sifu whom is the student of Uncle Bill(Willem De Thouars). In a REAL fight, the most effective places to hit are the neck, eyes, testicles, back of the head, spinal column, etc. NONE of this would be allowed in a BJJ fight or the ring. But in a real fight, there isn't a ref or a ring. Just a pissed off guy and asphalt, possibly a knife, and possibly 4 friends right around the corner. That fight needs to be ended QUICK.

BJJ is not better. BJJ isn't even that great in a street fight. It is meant for the ring. In a street fight, go ahead and fight on the ground like in BJJ. Do you know how long it will take to end that fight? His friends will jump in and beat the shit out of you. It's funny also how BJJ shows how 'effective' it is by the following statement: 90% of fights end up on the ground. Well guess what everyone. EVERY single fight starts standing up.

dont get me wronge, i love judo and think its great for self defence and also traditional ju-jitsu. but in a 'fair' fight, a bjj stylst will submit you, i just didnt like gemsmider's comment about it not being effective when it clearly is. btw, i train in judo, tjj and bjj as i think they all compliment each other well. my comment was not to disrespect any other style....

tbh i thought they were the same o.o not being narrow minded
mgbrawl (September 1, 2008 at 10:51 am)
actually, bjj is the most effective martial art against any other 'single' style. and is proven to be. dont really know where you were going there?.........

i agree to be honest judo helps more
gemsmider (August 31, 2008 at 12:18 pm)
Judoka aren't interested at mma. MMA isn't the goal of martial art!Bjj is a complementary martial art, unaccompanied is useless. Only judo is effective, bjj no.
kommisar (August 31, 2008 at 12:43 am)
Is that why there are so many successful judokas in MMA? Shut up.
