I've seen may Balanchine clips. I own the whole Balanchine collection that is basically available on video. From "Prodigal Son" to "The Balanchine Celebrations" etc. Even "The Balanchine Essays: Epaulement & Port De Bras" with Suki Schorer & Merrill Ashley. My favorite is the documentary which has so many wonderful clips. I also love the Jacques D'Amboise collection which has a beautiful old complete TV Broadcast of "Apollo."

Thank you for understanding...I'm a teacher as well. If you can find some clips or Kulture vids about Balanchine, you'll see what I'm talking about...it's considered "cheating" but it makes for beautiful lines.

You are so cool! I love your thoughtfulness on dance. Ah... Horton, yes! SIGH! I am a dancer as well and dance teacher. Those little Graham like skips with an element of batterie for example. WILD about Balanchine. Just not seeing it but ya know maybe one day I'll get it. The bottom line for me is the beauty of Paul Taylor's work and his company. Too bad it's Lisa Viola's last season as a ompany dancer!

I understand what you're saying and thank you for the compliment - but I'm not certain how exactly you're missing the Balanchine influence...it's almost as clear as day to a dancer. This is a piece that is clearly Balanchine/Horton influenced - I studied Graham for nearly 6 years and I'm not seeing that much of an impression of her; some of the lifts and arm movements possibly, but the legwork is definitely not Graham.

Your explanation valiant. I appreciate your technical knowledge. But I just don't see it. Interestingly, for me it's more about Graham technique. Although Paul danced with her for years. This piece feels more Martha influenced than his others great works 'Company B.' 'Esplanade' for example.

Lisa Viola studied at SAB for a while. So did Patrick Corbin.

Actually in the beginning when she extends a la second to arabesque attitude, notice how the leg isn't directly behind her -- that's the Balanchine technique, also when they developpe en avant together you can see the leg is not directly in front of them either - the Balanchine technique (if you didn't already know) allows for the leg to extend higher when it's held slightly on the outer side of the body rather than directly behind, in front, or parallel to the body...make sense?
