Again wrong. The 10% number is a total myth and applies to nothing.

The 10% of brain use thing is a myth, that's not how the brain works. Parts of the entire brain light up with activity all the time.

i suppose my first reaction was sort of pity for the rats but maybe it will help science and understanding

Less than 10% of it is used by us consciously, some of that being sensory, hearing, reasoning, etc. Obviously, the use of the brain is always in progress and always increasing as wisdom comes. The human brain IS 100% active, but only 10% of it can be used at any given time to prevent sensory/neural overload. And other parts of the brain are not in use for we haven't got the ability to use it. But, mastering things such as meditation can allow more than 10% of your brain.

You know that this is a myth right? We use ALL of our brain all the time. Not just 10 percent of the total capacity.
vanessalovesbert (May 5, 2008 at 10:11 pm)
Yes and I think that this time period is a very real example of self-destruction.
pontus515 (May 5, 2008 at 9:37 pm)
Yeah true. But they got to start somewhere. I dont think we´re so far away from being able to skip the connect-to-brain-thing. Soon we´ll be able to connect a mechanical hand directly on the forearm. And the human is too smart for her on good x)Our great succes too often leads to destruction. Sad but true.
vanessalovesbert (May 5, 2008 at 8:45 pm)
I know. But I just don't think it's right. I hate the feel of all these wires and hooks and shit. Don't get me wrong, technology has come a long way, it's great. But this wasn't meant to be, all of these disections and use of animals for such things. Sure, humans are very much capable and sucessful in ruling this world over. That doesn't make it right, though.
pontus515 (May 5, 2008 at 5:31 pm)
Yeah you got a good point there. I think it´s better to build a small, maneuverable robot to find people below collapsed buildings. The rat still got its own will. The only thing this stuff is doing is to stimulate an area in the brain and making the rat thinking about movin to the right, for example. It may deny the "order". But if the rat is moving to the right the controller is stimulates a part in the rats brain, and that will make the rat feel good, and will continue to follow the "orders".
vanessalovesbert (May 5, 2008 at 12:44 am)
But controlling a rat's brain seems so stupid. I don't think stripping the animal of will helps us in any way. And I bet that animal loves having wires shoved in his brain. Rats andany other animal, for that matter, have very different body structures than humans. The experimentation on animals doesn't do much for us, despite what they tell you.
