Yes, you're right. English is a very illogical language. In English, we have about 40-odd sounds and only 26 letters to cater for them. I'm an English language student! :)

about non-native english speakers and cutting some slack: i live in finland and taught english language discussion groups in a local adult education college, and i've run into this issue with friends and students alike... they can speak better english than they can write. and the reason for this is because of the differences between english and finnish: in english, there's a lot of different ways to enunciate letters (with rules for how to do it), whereas finnish is one letter, one sound.
