I don't think that the movie is about aliens, it is mostly about humans' desire to explore the unknown and expand their knowledge.

Along the way, there's some symbolism, other messages (awe for space and its potential, dangers in technology for dehumanization, etc.), maybe some deeper meanings, etc., but that's the basic story.

the third monolith, orbiting around Jupiter, used as a stargate to send one representative of the human species, now further advanced partly due to the aliens, many light-years, to the current-day ancestors of the aliens so they can study the results of their influence (the "hotel room" Bowman winds up in, is a chamber to house him while he's being studied); and then the last monolith to transform that human into a Star Child/superhuman. |
