They decided to land the probe on the asteroid even though it was not made for that in order to get closer images (just before impact). However, it couldn't do much after the landing because of this fact.

we wouldnt be able to do anything to stop them . they have chaotic orbits and sometimes are detected just after they leave earth's orbit because of the sun blocking us from seeing them

That is more scary than aliens and UFOs , there is another one Hermes which could cross earth's orbit in 2028
