top of my head i would say sony vegas, pinical ultimate, premier pro...final cut pro..can probably all do this effect. as for special effects i would say the only limit is your imagination and what plugins you can get...skys the limit really.

im not sure of any free software that can do this. you can download a demo of aftereffects however and play with it for a bit
