Arithmetic and Trogonometry was so complex and time-consuming before calculators were invented. I built my first scientific calculator (it used reverse Polish logic) from a kit in about 1974 and boy was that a good investment! I got the drop on all the guys with slide rules and tables and I got to use it in my exams.I reckon it saved me about 20 minutes in a 3-hour exam and my results kicked serious butt. It meant left-brainers like me could do Engineering at last.

Maybe you should do a search here on YouTube with abacus. Don't you think that it would be advantageous for Americas children to work those higher calculations in their heads like the Asians do? Maybe we wouldn't loose jobs to overseas?? This is a really cool tool. I'm glad I took the time to watch this, I learned something new.

The people that invented the microprocessor all used slide rules. ;) I think that TheMathGuy may have a point. - I'm not saying we should go back to the abacus (for instance) but calculating trigonomic functions and roots without a calculator is almost a lost art.

how do you spell the name
fizzlefist (August 14, 2007 at 4:54 am)
lol, how many kids today can even do basic multiplication and division without a calculator?

Are you saying designing a mechanical calculator takes more skill than designing a modern processor ;)
TheMathGuy (March 11, 2007 at 6:55 am)
That's nifty! People were so much more ingenious when they didn't have computers to do the thinking for them.
