Keep in mind that "elegant" is just an official term for written Thai. It doesn't literally mean "elegant" or "high-class".

specifictalk, Thai talk shows tend to use elegant Thai(aka written Thai, ภาษาเขียน) which can also be found in newspaper. Maybe that's why it's harder to understand.

It's like what the fuck are they saying!I just think Thai ppl look down on Lao and think Lao accent is funny that's why many pretend not to understand but if I can understand Thai then Thai can understand Lao cuz the words are similar and the ones that are different most rhyme.

Sabaidee. Thappreluck07 . To answer your question, "Do a lot of Thai people know the lao.." I'd say yes. I, as a Thai person, can understand 90% percent of Lao--depends on the Lao accent too. Yes, I have to admit it was really hard listening to Lao at the beginning but it gets much easier as my ears adapt themselves to the language. In my opinion, respectively, Lao has words that are considered informal(or street talk) in Thai. Paa(Fish), in Thai, is informal, but "Plaa" is formal. thailao(.)net
