I'm pretty sure that Michael Stipe wrote the lyrics. He co-wrote the song with the Palominos guys.

WOW,...found this after Syd Straw's clip w/ MS backing vocals (Future 40's). Incredible,...MS could probably sing the "Messiah" and pull it off. Thanks, from long time 688 (Atlanta) customer.
