thanks for the great clip. imdb says she had a 15-minute TV (variety?) show on the Dumont early TV network, in 1950! her records were a kids' contest prizes in a leftwing newsletter from the '40s, this is the first I've heard her play or sing. I have a Hazel Scott sheet music portfolio of "5 SOLOS FROM BOOGIE WOOGIE TO THE CLASSICS" (C) 1943. w/Prelude in C#-, Hungarian Rhapsody, Dark Eyes etc. (her transcriptions). Mentions "child prodigy," Cafe Society Uptown, "beautiful colored girl".

That's so great! As for the date: Scott asks the people to join the "March of dimes 1955" Does it make this 1955 (or 1954?)?

Being rejected by a big company is more reflective of big executives not knowing the product or audience they try to sell to. You think the execs at ABC knew why people bought Coltrane? All they knew is that he sold records--because he had already sold records. If Hazel were a household name, then ABC would have be listening.

It seems difficult to distinguish between international politics and Jim Crow. The blacklists were created by the industries affected, not the government. Blacks always had difficulty making recordings--and some didn't like that the large percentage of the profits they made went to record companies. So they started their own labels. The racism extended to recording sessions, in that blacks had better get it in one take because they didn't get the studio time.

alot of blues and R&B artists in the 40's and 50's we'rent allowed to appear on TV, Radio or on major labels because of the color of there skin, Mingus was blacklisted and that is why he started Debut Records with Max Roach-It was really bad at this time-They even had white artists coming in to record black music which led to the black musicians not receiving royalties for there work-Look up Payola scandal and race records...Hazel did perform for the soviets which MacCarthy did not like!
