This presents for the very first time a visual account of the historic voyages of discovery made by the Father of Maritime Education of the Philippines, Admiral Tomas Cloma who founded the Philippine Maritime Institute. PMI is now run by Cloma's grand daughter Rizabel Cloma-Santos. It was in the 1948-1949 period when Adm. Cloma, in command of T/S Dagohoy (named after famed Boholano warrior) discovered the Kalayaan Island Group (known internationally as the Spratlys)in search of rich fishing grounds. This area is the focus of the overlapping claims of the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and other countries asserting exclusive economic zones in the South China Sea. Cloma made at least 3 journeys to what he declared the 'Principality of Freedomland', the last in April 1972. In recognition of his efforts, Cloma was awarded the Philippine Legion of Honor with the rank of Legionnaire by then Pres. Fidel V. Ramos on Dec, 21, 1996. This video essay features photos taken by Adm. Cloma himself during that last expedition in April 1972. This is a tribute marking the 36th anniversary of that final voyage to the Spratlys. One question that remains persists is whether the Philippines' claim to the Kalayaan Islands is still alive and how solid its historical foundations are. One photo in this video never before published shows Cloma handing over to the Ambassador of China at the time the Chinese flag the Filipino explorer found on the main island of the Spratlys when he 'discovered' them. Note: Further information from a viewer in Canada ---"Many of those pictures were taken by Tomas Cloma's brother(my grandfather), who was the sea man. "Admiral" Cloma was, in fact, a lawyer. - E Cloma"

I guess this means that the Filipinos do have a claim on the Kalayaan Group of Islands (Spratlys). I agree with SkillzuR. Let us hope for the best in this endeavor. The Spratlys should be a part of the Philippines. This has been a story I've heard ever since I was a kid.The 'Admiral' is my grandpa's brother. I do agree with the viewer from Canada though. The 'Admiral' is in fact, a lawyer. His brother (grandpa) was the Captain on the voyage to Spratlys.
