Mr. Premont has it right: (after James Brown), the pinnacle of funk is Tower of Power. At both bass (Francis Rocco Prestia) and drums (David Garibaldi) you have the some of the most crafty, sophisticated funk ever played. Listen and learn (and enjoy!)

ozhall3, Alan Gorrie--who sings the lead here--was usually the band's bassist in it's original iteration. When CTC was done back in 1975, Gorrie and Hamish Stuart switched, with Stuart going to the bass and Gorrie doing the plucked ax. Stuart went on to play in Paul McCartney's band and sang the lead when David Sanborn covered Al Green's "Love And Happiness". I think he left AWB in 1982, and only played with them again at Atlantic's 40th Anniversary.

Can you guys recommend me some more bands like this? I normally stick to classic rock, but recently iv fallen completely in love with funk. Can you guys recommend me some good funk artists/bands mainstream or underground? Only ones that i really actively listen to right now are the Chilli Peppers and James Brown. Also i play both drums and bass so recommened me some crazy individual artists that really know how to rip it up too. Thanks :D
