Over a period of time latinization of Arabic names took place. for example: Ibn Rushd became "Averrose" Ibn Sina became "Avencina". And some place names under went latinization such as Jabal al Taraq became "Gibraltar", Al-cordaba became "Cordova, wadi al-ramala (stoney place or valley) became "Guatemala". There are many more. One just needs to understand Arabic and he will be well on his way to discovery.

I don't understand this naming convention of "Islam/Muslim culture". What is the link between the religion and the cultural achievement? I always prefer the more general "Arabian", just like "Hellenistic" and "Roman" culture. No question though that Arabian culture invigorated Europe through the Romanised "barbarian(?)" culture of Spain.

"Islam made those barbarics civilized"Slightly ignorant comment. However, Islam done great things in Spain, and the period was clearly a golden period for Islam. One wonders where it all fell apart. The internal bickering didnt help. Its great that we are finally beginning to understand the "dark ages" was a myth and that by looking at the Islamic, and indeed the Jewish world, it was a time of great achievments.
