Intelligent Design and Creationism/Evolution Controversy

'Intelligent Design' (ID) is a new form of creationism that emerged after legal decisions in the 1980s hampered the inclusion of 'creation science' in the public school curriculum. In the 20 years since ID appeared, there has been no evidence of it being used to solve problems in biology. Although the scientific/scholarly part of ID has been a failure, the 'cultural renewal' part of ID has been a success, as supporters of ID seek 'restoration' of a theistic sensibility in American culture to replace what they consider an overemphasis on secularism.

A creationists peer review: God said. I believe it. That settles it. Hypothesis proven.

"What has that to do with anything?"It has to do with the scientific community being allowed to say what is and is not good science.

"Let scientists do science. Let them follow the evidence."Yes let scientists do science. And let scientist decide what is and is not good science. And the scientific community is clear on that point. Evolution is science creationism is not."If you look at the discovery institutes website, thats what they say. They aren't trying to get creationism or even explicit ID into the classroom."That is horseshit. Getting ID into the classroom is what the Dover case was all about!

Thats my point. Let scientists do science. Let them follow the evidence. Let people discuss. Let public schools discuss the strengths and weaknesses of evolutionary theory. If you look at the discovery institutes website, thats what they say. They aren't trying to get creationism or even explicit ID into the classroom. They want students to study evolution MORE. They want students to hear the strengths and weaknesses and not just the faked Haeckel drawings.

"Barry Marshall was ridiculed..for saying that bacteria caused peptic ulcerative disease. And guess what? he was right."And how do you know he was right? Because over time the scientific community was won over because of the supporting data. There are those who dispute what they call the "germ theory" and claim that microorganisms don't cause of disease. And like creationists their motives are religious not scientific. And they aren't detured by evidence or support for the "germ theory."

What has that to do with anything? And besides, I've already pointed out that Barry Marshall was ridiculed just 30 years ago for saying that bacteria caused peptic ulcerative disease. And guess what? he was right. The idea that scientific endeavor should be squelched to protect science - pretty absurd.

On behalf of the Royal Society Steve Jones (the award-winning geneticist and author) said that suggesting that creationism and evolution be given equal weight in education was..."rather like starting genetics lectures by discussing the theory that babies are brought by storks."

A little more education for you. The Royal Society is the Brittish counterpart to the American NAS. Like the NAS the Royal Society has issued a statement endorsing evolution and denouncing ID as religion.."Intelligent design proposes that some species are too complex to have evolved through natural selection and that therefore life on Earth must be the product of a designer. Its supporters make only selective reference to the overwhelming scientific evidence that supports evolution."

"To-day, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed His blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice... And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people."-Adolf Hitler, 12 April 1922

"In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish poison." -Adolf Hitler, 12 April 1922
