Some ships have water cannons on the bow of the ship. New Cruise Liner Ships are equipped with a hi-pitched sound blaster.

Why aren't the ships armed? It would be easy to install a little canon. Whoever approaches the ship from behind could easily be defeated within seconds.

I think if I owned a ship, I would be placing a call to Blackwater USA to purchase a little "insurance" for my passage. I would ask for former SEALS that are used to working on ships and tell them shoot anything in range.

It would suck to go against a modern nuclear sub, in an old rusty diesel electric...

Economy is a big deal man. The ships may move slow but what they lack in speed they make up for in size. Think for a second if that tanker was sunk at the mouth of a harbor. It would take months to clean it up. Slowing things down. If multiple attacks happened it be even worse.

if i was a pirate i would steal a old submarine and buy material for it from the black market. Then just attack out of no where.

they are probably just trying to emphasize the terrorism aspect to get more international attention/support.

As shown in the clip, tankers don't explode. After a small initial explosion, they burn (the tanker shown burned for three days and was totalled). They're also slow, as shown in the video, and it would be tough to get one close enough to a port to have the small blast kill many people. I also find the piracy-terrorism link a bit weak in this video. The threat is far more an economic one. I think the real threat to life is probably the profusion of foreign semen mentioned in the first part.
