Trust me, you really want to start with a smaller one :) Riding these bikes require a lot of self-controll AND experience. A 400cc bike will be enough for you as a starter. And when you are bored with it, you can go on with the bigger beasts :)

Do some research. Go on a motorcycle forum and ask that same question...
sykipeja (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
Why?
mohammad112388 (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
Hahhahahaha. Start on a fireblade? Wow, you are a dumbass...
sykipeja (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
Ok, thanks. So I'll buy Honda CBR 1000RR fireblade. The funny is that i've never riden on any bike before, but i'm gonna take a risk.

When I said farther, I meant they were farther apart. They Yamaha is a high rpm machine, meaning its powerband is set in the high rpms. The gears are farther apart from each other to allow the rider to fully utilize this energy at the higher rpms without having to shift too much. This is why the Yamaha is not as ideal to be used on the streets. You have to be at around 10k to really get a feel for the torque of the bike.
