maybe they thought he was drunk because the songs lyrics seem to be that of a drunks, also in this clip he seems to be drunk although it looks like hes acting, they probably didn't know who he was and assumed he was some drunk guy

Garth was a character on "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" that was so mean he bought his bed wetting son plastic sheets for Christmas. He was then killed off by being impaled by a Christmas tree. He was so popular that they brought Martin back as his twin brother Barth and Fernwood 2Night was the spin-off and it was ALL an act. Bottle in front of me included. Who could forget Jerry and Happy Kind and The Mirth Makers. Not me.Great Stuuf.

I saw this original broadcast in winter 1977/78. I was amazed by Tom and when my sister, a DJ at a local radio station, told me he was a real artist and found an album for me (Nighthawks?) I became a lifelong fan. Thanks for posting this. Ian

You should make a point of posting that in every Martin Mull video. Every single one. Maybe rewrite it slightly. But yes, it would definitely be a great comment for you to make repeatedly.
