Depending on the lava flow and what you would like to do but in general I would say 10 meter is close enough for good shots and more or less save. Don't underestimate the heat radiation of a large lava flow!

Geology is very interesting field. Thanks for your very great comments here. I have known more great knowledge. Lava flow is my most favorite for this magnificent video.
