I think i know why he didnt shoot him, mainly because he was a family man, and was higher rank Officer. I wish the ending though was he would run into a Soldier and it be like Schindlers List where he would try to shoot him but hes Gun would keep Malfuctioning, that would make for a Dramatic scene.
