That's the problem. The government isn't like private industry. First we work on a fixed budget. Second it's not a matter of efficiency but a lack of man power. One person can only do so much within the confines of rational behavior. For example, take the Occupational Safety and Health group(OSHA) many people go out and investigate business abuses. How many cases can an OSHA investigator do per day? It's a question of manpower.

It's not that simple, this is about human resources. There are only so many people to do the work. We are already at peak efficiency. The other problem is that the current administration didn't really want us to do our jobs because we work for the people of the country and not big business. That's not to say we haven't done good work but we serve at the pleasure of the executive branch and must act accordingly. It would be nice to be fully funded with ample human resources.

Ryooken: perhaps if your managers were asking you & your co-workers the kinds of questions that hospitals are asking their employees, & if you & your co-workers were able to come up with the kinds of solutions that would save your jobs, then maybe nobody's job would be in jeopardy. But these questions can't only be asked when there's a crisis. They have to be asked, everyday; and workers need to be truly interested in doing their jobs in the most efficient & effective manner.

Yes, this is true the health care is nice. However, the interesting thing is that many of us that choose federal service don't do it for the money.

Ryooken: you said in an earlier post that you worked for the government. Are you ever asked by those who manage your department what they can do to help you and your co-workers be more productive? In health care, we're asked all the time what we need; and, also, what we think we could be doing differently to save time & money. I know there's a big difference between those in gov & those in medicine. We're dealing w/ life & death so our motivation to be efficient is coming from a different place.

Ryooken: I honestly don't want to see anyone lose their jobs. I know that the majority of people who dedicate their lives to civil service are there because they care about people & their welfare. My mother, two of her brothers, her father & two of my siblings worked in government; and I can tell you, they weren't there for the wages. Although, the health benefits were really nice.I'm in health care, and know that when we aren't adequately staffed, everyone suffers. Including the patients.
