Ignoring any doping considerations, I think the main problem with Riis is simply that he was not particularly popular. You have a similar problem now with Cadel Evans, as people find him to hard to warm to. I remember Indurain dividing opinion similarly. For me the last truly great rider was Hinault, but you have to remember that some of this is because of how old you as a spectator at the time.
