You can also buy special screws called "Squeak-no-more". Once you install the screw through the carpet, subfloor, and drive it into the joist, the head of the screw pops off with the blow of a hammer and the repair is hidden. Just be sure you drive the screw down far enough before you pop off the head.

Try to install a thin shim between the joist and the loose subfloor.

What about if I already have carpet down and I have a squeak. How do I repair the squeak from the basement?
