Researchers of Carnegie Mellon University has managed to teach a computer to recognize and transform 2D images into 3D.

If the person who did this put the origional photo in the far back we would not see the black cutout which is likely just the colour his 3d program was set to render in.Sorry...this long winded response was for SunnyShawFilms. If you want me to send you some examples drop me a line and i'll show you. It's time consuming but pretty easy.

I normally use Photoshop and 3D studio max.You can find a tutorial called 3d Matte Painting and Camera Mapping from the gnomon workshop. You basically cut your image into different layers baced on distance with alpha, and drop them onto planes in 3D. Set up a camera and use a modifier called "camera mapping" and place your planes at a distance from the camera which corrisponds with the depth in the origional photo.

Actually there IS software that does this... Panoconvert, 1-2-3d, Flythrough... In fact Im not 100% sure this wasnt done with one of them

Perhaps you should read the video description...there is no software available to download...unless perhaps you code and program something to do this yourself...good luck with that :P

Now dont get me wrong, im not by any means saying i could write a program that could achive the same level of detail or clarity as this, all im saying is that its been done before and this is by no means breaking into the 4th dimension. :p
