Actually she supposedly didn't die. Sherilyn Fenn has confirmed that if they had been picked up for a third season, they would have revealed that she survived. Not to mention David Lynch actually planned to make a Twin Peaks spinoff, with Audrey Horne as the main character, taking place after the second season. This idea was later adapted into Mulholland Drive.

the original ending was actually exponentially better. it continued a bit after "i need to brush my teeth" if you remember the scene. too bad it was too violent for then tv or something, it was cut.
