Whelen WPS-4004 Monthly Test

This is the monthly test of an older Whelen WPS-4004. It is located in a rural area along a rarely-traveled county highway about four miles northeast of Vinton. This siren is part of the Duane Arnold Energy Center siren system. The DAEC is Iowa's only nuclear power plant. In the first still photo of the siren, you can see the steam plume from the DAEC cooling towers in the far background, about 10 miles distant.Voice starts at 0:31 (Sounded four times). Actual test starts at 2:58.If you listen closely, you can also hear a literal chorus of other sirens, especially after this siren winds down. Other sirens heard consist of a mix of WPS-4004s and WPS-3016s (The two most common models in the DAEC system). During the attack/fast wail test, you can also just barely hear one of Vinton's WPS-2807s (It has a lower pitch than the other sirens). Rural areas are an amazing place for siren ambience, because sound travels an incredibly long distance.I profusely apologize for the annoying wind noise and the shaky video. It was VERY windy during the test, and even with the camera mounted on a tripod, it still shook. I also apologize for the truck that goes by at 1:33, I had no choice but to park on a nearby gravel road.

I meant that you could go to a location where you can here a lot of sirens at the same time. You could do it during the test after you record the 3016 in the next test of the DAEC siren system.

If you mean the EMA office where the test is initiated...I'll have to check with our local EMA director to see if they'll allow it. Not being a county or city employee, there's a chance they might not want me poking around the EMA office. Oh the joys of a post-9/11 world.

Could you get a system recording of the DAEC siren system one day?

i think that whelens can`t rotate fully is because of the awg copper wires that are in them

i thought there was probably a blower motor that used to be on that platform

Actually, all of the DAEC sirens, including the newest ones, have those "platforms" on the poles below the control boxes. I've never known for sure what they are, but if I had to make a guess, I'd say they're just there as a convenient place to lay the control box panel door after removing it for maintenance, or provide a place for workers to stand or kneel. Otherwise they are a mystery to me, because they're not solid, it's just a rectangular frame with absolutely nothing in the middle.

you can probably tell by the platform what used to be there

The way I understand it, it's because of the way the speakers are wired up. Instead of using electrical contacts that allows the siren head to continuously rotate in one direction, the speaker head is connected with physical wires that run to the control box mounted on the pole below. Thus, to prevent the wires from becoming tangled (and potentially damaged), the siren will oscillate 360 in one direction, then 360 in the other direction. This is the explanation I've heard, but I could be wrong.
