Google TechTalksJuly 26, 2006Luis von Ahn is an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University, where he also received his Ph.D. in 2005. Previously, Luis obtained a B.S. in mathematics from Duke University in 2000. He is the recipient of a Microsoft Research Fellowship. ABSTRACTTasks like image recognition are trivial for humans, but continue to challenge even the most sophisticated computer programs. This talk introduces a paradigm for utilizing human processing power to solve problems that computers cannot yet solve. Traditional approaches to solving such problems focus on improving software. I advocate a novel approach: constructively channel human...

"Programming makes you feel superior to other people" this is on the reasons a clever programmer wrote on his paper about Intro to Programming. Now I found an award PHD hottest graduate motivating??? yucks??? to make this world a better place. Maybe it would be also interested to know if Google bought his license for FREE. Our modern life is not only full of crackers en hackers are also full of ethically amputated.

I think the whole idea here is that validity of the label is described by the person, culture and current events. In this particular example "yuck" would describe (along with the other tags such as president) not just the visual aspect of the image but also contextual of current events and opinions of the president.

What is a valid label? If a picture of Pres. Bush is successfully labeled "yuck", isn't that a corruption, which tends to disprove the idea that the algorithm is very secure?
