Semi automatic gear boxes have clutches as well. They can't start without a clutch. For the shifting they don't need it anymore (maybe downshifting but not upshifting). They just interrupt the ignition for a split second during shifting.

Lol, Ayrton Senna didn't really know what he was talking about when he spoke of the gear box. Bloody good driver though, sad he had to go the way he did.So before they brought in the semi-auto gear box, did the F1 cars have a clutch?

not true, in fact the rules state the cars have to have a reverse gear. The car gets pushed backwards because 1. mechanics can see better and are therefore more accurate in placing the car in the pit, 2. especailly back in the day, reverse gear was fragile and prone to breakage.

Race cars don't have areverse gear. They don't need it. It could get engaged in the heat of racing. Not to mention the additional weight.

i would rather drive the h pattern transmition any day...the first car (the one that berger drives) is the v12 honda 1991,which is h pattern, u will see and hear it in senna at spa...
