This is the film Singapore's censorship board doesn't want people to see. It's the story of opposition politician Chee Soon Juan, who has been imprisoned twice for championing democratic change in the city state. The censors declared it a "party political film" and it was pulled from April 2005's Singapore International Film Festival line-up after the director was warned he could face two years in jail if the screening went ahead. Directed by Martyn See. 'Singapore Rebel' has been selected to premiere in two human rights film festivals this month. The inaugural New Zealand Human Rights Film Festival and the Amnesty International Film Festival (USA) will host a series of screenings in Auckland, Wellington and West Hollywood. Film-maker Martyn See will not attend the festivals. He is now under investigation by the Singapore police for "the making" of 'Singapore Rebel'---This is the video that actually prompted me to get a Director's account on YouTube and take uploading more seriously. It's taken me this long to find the video again!

singaporean quality of life is not enjoyed by all - the poor & less fortunate, in ur country for example. The presence of an honest opposition party atleast will try to keep the current govt. honest in it's dealings where there are more transparency & accountability - to ascertain that there is no wastage of resources & possible corruption when handling the purse string of the country.Another thing which u don't have in singapore is a free & fair judiciary system, judges are in the govt's pocket

The ultimate check and balances would be in the voting power of the electorate. We will vote the PAP out of office should the need arise, and this is enough to keep them on their toes.Oh, and by "relatively credible opposition", I was thinking of the Worker's Party. Definitely not the SDP.

The presence or absence of strong opposition parties have no bearing on whether a government is competent and honest. We do not need opposition parties to find faults in the government. The best way to decide would be based on one's quality of life-something that no amount of political rhetoric or speech can twist. P.S We do have a relatively credible opposition that we can and will vote into office should the PAP one day go wrong.

how very true but ask urself this one question - how does one know that one has a competent & honest govt if there exists no credible & strong opposition party/ies to be the check & balances ? singapore needs to have strong opposition party/ies.

Based on the belief WP is a credible party, ppl shud put their faith in voting for them so tat will enable ppl to have an alternative voice via them instead of listening to one party talking all the time.Ppl have got to realise that by voting for credible members into parliament, it does NOT mean the ruling party will stop ruling the country cos their numbers will still enable them to have overall power in parliament.

He is trying to put some points across to ppl but he use the wrong approach.

Chee Soon Juan can't be trusted. How's he be somone capable? How can Singaporean put their faith with a man like him? I think Law is fair. This man is sick.

Excuse me, they don't have to think.. they ARE doing wat anything they want. Get ur reality facts correct.

No need for him to say I also know. Question is the controversies surrounding the issues and election procedures do highlight a problem.

Personally, I believe the WP is a credible party.. but without critical info withheld in govt confines and funding, they can't make critical decisions to benefit the ppl.. in other words, who says they can't do a job as well as the PAP if they are given the same equipment? At the present moment, the media is totally controlled and one-sided to suit the objectives of the ruling party. In other words, the ppl are blinded from the other side of info to make an informed decision.
