Not so long ago, in 1990, there was no skyscrapers at all in Shanghai! bicycles were everywhere still... until they decided in 1991 to built the Pearl TV Tower. It seems there were 2500 towers ("skyscapers") in 2001, and probably over 5000 towers in and around this nice city... Thanks, and kudos to modern building technologies!

The Shanghai maglev is only a very short distance toy-train. It's expected, in 2010, to do Shanghai-Hangzhou, which will bring the distance (back and forth) total to 163 kms of tracks. The French TGV exists since 1981 (nearly 40 years now!) with many thousands kms of tracks. Besides, the Aérotrain, i.e. the French maglev (which was abandoned since 1976) already did 430.4 kms/h in 1975... in fact, that's probably why the Shanghai maglev is adjusted to this 431 kms/h speed... |
