I believe I can help.This was done on a closed set with only Patrick, the camera guy and a member of the production crew believed to be Moore. This was done for Gene's birthday and was done with no knowledge of any of the crew and cast. From what I have read, this was done during Season 2 after filming had finished. The camera man was given $20 to not tell the union as he would have been over his hours!*from an email from moore himself

"Subtle." I think regardless of how many people did this, it's still Picard's doing. My opinion only, though. If anyone happens to come up with more solid info, let me know please.

well there is subtle differance between "Patrick Stewart decided to have some fun" and the whole film crew coming together to plan this.

Why not? They have a prop department. An hour before filming they call him up and say "Hey Patrick, we're going to do a sound check and test the cameras. Go snag something from props and let's have a little fun."

and he just happened to have a cane and hat nearby and the camera man just happened to be on station and ready for this? While you're theory would be quite amusing were it true, it just can't be.

Since he was walking around the set my guess is they needed to do a sound check of the various areas and Patrick Stewart decided to have some fun. You gotta love the guy.
