Looks great to me. Wouldn't mind getting one myself. I currently own Two Yaesu (VX-150) and am ready to buy a FT-1802M next week. I will wait for the FT-450 to get used a little more and hear a few more reviews before making the investment. Initially, though, it looks good enough to try.

Yaesu now has a $250 off coupon for this rig! You can find it on the net for just about 600 bucks. A bargain! The IF-DSP is amazing too for an inexpensive rig.

This is a SUPERB HF/6 rig, and an incredible value, considering the 250 dollar off coupon Yaesu currently is offering (630 bucks online)! My local radio club here in Chicago lent me one, and it hears VERY well, with a great display. I will be purchasing one come spring or summer!

The 897 has 2m and 70cm in addition to HF and 6m. If you don't use or need the added VHF/UHF bands, i'd say go for the FT-450. It is a more current design, and i've heard the DSP works quite well for a rig in this price range. I myself am shopping around for a rig, but am taking my time for now.

I know the tuning knob is small, but does it have any heft or weight to it when turning it? Or does it feel light and cheap like the FRG-100 shortwave receiver?

I owned an Ft-897 and now I don't. The FT-897 is a good radio but I hated shifting through all the menus. The FT-897 of course has HF 2m and 6m where-as the FT-450 has HF and 6m. It is a toss-up on the two. For a base station rig I like the FT-450 better.This is just my opinion. |
