They didn't really have a choice to go or not. It was either go and kiss your ass goodbye, go to jail for refusing induction, or leave the country never to return to your family. Some were drugs addicts, assassins, rapists and baby killers. But people like my uncle and his friend never were. People spat on his fellow vets returning home. Spit on the politicians that wanted the war in the 1st place. Ppl like my uncle & his friend had no choice to join. They were drafted dumbfuck.

Korean War was 1950-53. Vietnam was going on long before the US got involved. French were there from '45-'54 and left after Bien Dien Phu. US had avisors there to ARVN since '54. Johnson had given the CIA approval for covert action into Laos and southern China because we knew supplies were coming from Russia and China from Hainan Island into Haiphong and Hanoi. This was one reason for the GOT. Then Johnson had Operation Rolling Thunder in '64. In '65, Gulf of Tonkin and LBJ sent troops = war.

They were transporting people out of Saigon on boats and helicopters because they knew the communists were going to move on Saigon. On the 30th, they were there until nightfall and as the last people were evactuated, Saigon fell to the communists. Soon after, before the country was unified as a communist state, the communists started cracking down on people who were sympathetic to the south and the US during the war. Kind of simliar to what happened in Cambodia with Khmer Rouge.

The United States was in South Vietnam basically because of the Domino Theory after China in 1949. If one country fell to Communism, the rest of the world would. It was basically another way of saying fighting communism which was just a way for them to get involved in wars and make money. But they were there assisting ARVN as advisors until '65, when Gulf of Tonkin (which I believe was faked) forced Johnson to send troops.
