You can't use it on a first row - for the very reason you so astutely point to - no previous generation. So you'd have to use another increase.

The yarn is a bulky single which is no longer being made, and I use it just for teaching, since it is easy to see clearly. The needles are a size suitable for the yarn. For socks you will want a much lighter weight yarn and needles.
