I always thought it was a criticism of people who stand by while others are starving/dying in other countries. If you do nothing to help its just as bad as saying thank God its them instead of you. I guess I never took offense because Bono sang that part bc I know how involved he also. I know he prob didnt write it but I doubt that someone would be so moved by hunger in Africa that they write a song to raise millions and have a line like that wo it having a double meaning imo
