Thanks for the info on Helen singing the entire song. Now I just have to find Readers Digest LP collection "A Sentimental Journey"

This clip comes from the film 'The Fabulous Dorseys' and the arrangement is the 1941 version which I have on the Brunswick/Vocalion 78. Helen O'Connell was a very quirky singer who just suited the JD band. The Dorsey Brothers had an impeccable pedigree having come up through the ranks with Red Nichols among others. My favourite sides are the 1934/35 Dorsey Brothers' Orchestra recordings all of which swing like hell, a lot of them with Bob Crosby singing.

The great Miss Helen O'Connell. I worked a corporate date with her in the early 1980's.What a broad -- in the best sense of the word....and she could put down the booze. Cool and limpid green eyes indeed!

Is there another version of Green Eyes, for the same era that has just a female singer? A little sexier or jazzy sounding?

Both of the Dorsey orchestras were great. The brothers were fantastic musicians. You have to love Helen O'Connell. I was able to see her in person at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans. It was in the mid 1960's and she was as good as in the 1940's. |
