I was at one of his gigs in Dublin in Ireland really and, suprisingly, he we was excellent fun. He spent most of the night cracking jokes and telling stories. He ironically referred to his well-known optimism and love of life- very funny guy as well as an excellent poet and singer.

When Cohen does it, its less a song and more a poem put to music. I think it has a thoughtful feel to it, rather than the mournful sound most people put in it. You have to take it on its own terms rather than comparing it to how others have done it.

It's amazing to hear people disparage this in any way. He wrote the words as a poem; Cohen is a great songwriter, not a singer, but I personally think it's fascinating to hear what he brings to the song. What I like about this is the arrangement, the background singers, and the fact that -- unlike so many of the covers -- Cohen sings "do ya" instead of "do you," conveying both the rhyme and the colloquial feeling of it.LOL re Anthony Bourdain.
