You 'clean' weight from the ground into another position. E.g. Clean and jerk, where you explosively lift the weight into the bottom of something somewhat like a push press.I don't have any oly gyms I can query, so perhaps I'm wrong, but that was my understanding.

The general public would view this as cheating even though it isn't. Kipping is just an explosive movement, kind of like... the olympic snatch.

If that's all you have, a slanted bar is better than nothing. I've used it before - you just get a lot more friction on the hands.

Ok so sorry for these stupid questions - thanks for the help. What if I don't have access to a straight bar with a wide enough width? Should I just stick to dead pullups and concentrate on other cross-fit exercises? Or can I still use the slanted bar but with just not as good results?

Use a straight bar with no grooves for grip. A slanted bar will greatly diminish your ability to generated a swing,Should width works perfectly or slightly more if you prefer.

Question that I hope a CrossFit expert on here sees and can answer: Do Kipping pullups have to be on a straight bar? My gym's pull-up bars are all angled slightly like this: /----\ Will I still be ok or should I seek out a straight bar? Also, what's the idea grip with for kipping pullups? Shoulder width? I vary my width for dead pull-ups -- same concept for CrossFit? thx.

At the end of the day, these movements are designed for to develop functionality. If you were pulling yourself up over something, you wouldn't just rely the muscles in your arms and back. You would do whatever it took to get over that point. If anyone thinks this is easy, I challenge you to perform this movement for five minutes non-stop. It's all about cardio.

Sure, this would be cheating if the goal was bodybuilding. Bodybuilding is designed to isolate specific muscle groups for maximum development. However, this in not the goal for this movement or any other movement that Cross Fit performs. The goal here as for any other movement in Cross fit is to develop explosive power, conditioning and to rev up the metabolic rate. There is a specific purpose in mind for every movement you see in Cross Fit.

i dunno...this just sorta seems like cheating. i couldnt do this and claim i could do that number of pullups and feel right...all it is, is swinging to get up...just doesnt seem right

I'll make one correction to my previous post: The kipping pull up was not designed for developing huge muscles. |
