hey! would you criticize her for a high Bflat..? please listen to her last Tristan, her live Tannhauser... she was (sorry, not, she IS) the greatest Wagner soprano of all times.

thx a lot mentioning Gertrude Grob-Prandl! she should always be remembered as one of the greatest dramatic sopranos of the last century (Brünnhilde/Isolde/Elektra/Turandot). the few vocal documents that exist are a proof that she was at least as good as Varnay or Nilsson who were born around the same time and who had just more luck! life is so cruel ...

Unfairly. VERY unfairly. Can you blame her for being a patriot even in times of darkness? She loved her native Norway, not the Nazi occupation.

all276 Not at all, I fully agree that Nilsson is far better as Bruhhilda. Her top is far superior and there are nuances(colors) in her singing that are strictly Nilsson, sounds that must be what Plato had in mind when he talked about "perfect intelligible ideas" of which all earthly entities are but mere copies. Also Nillson was the more accomplised singer because she also was the definitive Elektra, Salome, Dyer's Wife, Turandot,Minnie, and yes Tosca.

I never knew that beacuse of her husbands business dealings with the nazi's, and her remaining in Norway in the nazi period, she was blacklisted a time....even Toscanini refused her and chose Helen Traubel. It is on wikipedia.
