I agree. He's a poet. In fact the whole song is a work of poetry.Probably the most beautiful popular ballad ever written.

I completely forgot about the Billy Ward version. Another great performance. Thanks for reminding me.

If not historys greatest lyricist, Mitchell Parrish taxes the talents of songwritings pantheon of musical poets to supersede him. Stardust is eloquent, elegant, elegiac & near-ethereal as a nostalgic musing of lost love; words of pure poetry: When our love was new & each kiss an inspiration. Exquisitely true. Then, But that was long ago. Now my consolation is in the stardust of a songThough I dream in vain, in my heart it will remain, my stardust melody, the memory of love's refrain.

The story sounds alot like Paul McCartney, dreaming up the melody to "yesterday" and it being so close to Hoagy's other great song, "Georgia On My Mind".

Hoagy had the tune in his head for sometime, and first recorded a version in 1927. It took several more years to "polish" up to this version, with help by by lyricist Mitchell Parish. John Lennon is quoted as saying Hoagy was his favorite songwriter.

I read that he was a 3-pack-a-day smoker, who liked the way the smoking made his voice sound. Sadly, he died of cancer, but with these videos he lives on.
