he didn't write it though he is said to have had this song in his repotoir in the late 20's/30's there is a 1930's recording of this song by a Blues Guitarist from Tenessee called Carl Martin. Skip James version as seen here is fairly different though in terms of playing style, melody etc. Both songs share similar lyrics though.

"Crow Jane must have deserved it ha "im not so sure there ever was a person named that. i've heard the term "crow janes" used in a few songs, like a blind willie mctell song... "these _____ crowjanes, dun got rough with me" (i forgot one word and which song it was unfortunetly)
