he didn't write it though he is said to have had this song in his repotoir in the late 20's/30's there is a 1930's recording of this song by a Blues Guitarist from Tenessee called Carl Martin. Skip James version as seen here is fairly different though in terms of playing style, melody etc. Both songs share similar lyrics though.
