your right, it doesnt matter harrietts2, but what about the part right before that goes, "the day i took your tiny hand,...", i always thought that it suggested a husband speaking about his wife. whatever, the song, like so many of her others, has such a "knowing" quality to it, that suggest a long life lived or good listening skills, or probably both. my 2 cents. anyways, great post.

....and how "the long ride home" is like my life, but by God's grace, even though he's hurt me, he will let me go to heaven someday, as in "home". It helped me get through a hard time in my life, I don't know that I think about it that way so much anymore though.

that's funny, I always thought of this from a woman's perspective. I guess it could be either. Why do you think it's a man's...because of the line, "your daddy gave a piece of land" as in it's an old fashioned song and she means a dowry by that. That's the only thing I can think of, of a reason why you think it. Doesn't really matter either way, probably means something different to different people. to me it's like singing to God of how he's hurt me in life.

I saw her the night before this show in Tucson. She is amazing live although I was bummed that EVERY song she played was from her new CD. She did Sweet Lorraine for the encore.

I have been listening to Patty for years. If you pay attention you will see that her lyrics are speaking as it if it were the male in the situation. This song and also alot of her others.
